Top 5 Things to Know Before Hosting a Student
A Guide for Future Go World Host Families
Opening your home to a student from another country is one of the most rewarding ways to build connection, cultural understanding, and lifelong memories. Hosting a student for just a few weeks through Go World’s short-term cultural exchange program is a simple, meaningful way to bring the world into your home. Learn how Go World Host Families make lifelong memories and friendships.
Whether you're hosting for the first time or considering joining our next program, here are the top five things to know before the journey begins with Go World.
1. Hosting Isn’t About Doing More, It’s About Sharing What You Already Do
You don’t need a packed itinerary or picture-perfect days. Hosting with Go World is about letting a student step into your daily life: family dinners, errands, Saturday soccer, evening walks. It’s these everyday moments that leave the deepest impact.
When students return home, they don’t talk about the sightseeing. They talk about the pancakes you made. The car rides to practice. The inside jokes. At Go World, we call that living like a local.
2. Students Aren’t Just Guests, They're Also Part of the Family
Go World Host Families welcome students into their homes as extended family, not visitors. Students are encouraged to participate, pitch in, and experience American family life from the inside. Think of it like this: you’re not providing a service, you’re creating a space for mutual exchange, where both sides give and grow.
3. Clear Expectations Help Everyone Thrive
Every home is different, and that’s a good thing. The key is to communicate early. Do you take shoes off at the door? Expect phones away at dinner? Prefer lights out by 10? Let your student know from day one. We’ve found that honest, kind communication is what helps students adapt quickly and feel at home. Go World Coordinators are always there to help guide that process.
4. You Are Never Alone
Every Go World Host Family is supported by a Go World Coordinator who knows your area, your student, and your program. They’ll check in regularly, be available when questions come up, and provide the structure and support you need throughout the experience.
You’ll also be invited to join our Go World Host Families Facebook Group, a private community where families connect, swap tips, and share stories from across the country.
From pre-arrival to farewell party, we’re with you every step of the way.
5. The Impact Lasts Longer Than You Think
Hosting for just two weeks can leave a mark that lasts a lifetime. Go World Host Families often tell us they didn’t expect how meaningful the connection would become or how quickly their student felt like family.
